Why do former athletes love startups? 📈
I constantly get asked if I miss playing tennis.
The short answer… not really.
But for a while, I did miss waking up with a clear mission - knowing exactly what I was working towards and why it mattered.
After 6 months in the startup world, I've realised something: It feels like playing tennis at the highest level again.
Here's why:
- •Mission clarity - I think a great startup has everyone rowing in the same direction, chasing the same goal.
- •Progress isn't linear - Some days you're flying, other days you're stuck. Momentum shifts constantly. Zooming out helps you see the bigger trend.
- •Iteration is everything - Skill stacking. Compounding. Small improvements every day. Build. Ship. Review. Adjust. Repeat.
- •Learning from your team - In a high performance environment, growth is a necessity not an option.
- •This is a sports team not a family - Some veterans, some rookies… It's a role playing meritocracy.
