My project based gap year
Last year I took a project-based gap year - the plan was to go wide, try new things and find more clarity on my direction.
It turned out to be one of the most interesting (and uncertain) years of my life.
It was a year of side quests…
- 🎥I made documentary films
- 🎿Lived on my own in the mountains skiing for 2 months
- 🚀Interned at a startup
- 🧱Volunteered in Cambodia
- 🏔️Did the Everest Base Camp Trek
and I read a bunch of books and met some awesome new people.
One of my biggest takeaways?
The way we imagine something will go and how it actually unfolds are usually two very different things.
But you'll never know what that reality looks like by sitting on the sidelines.
You have to take the risk and put yourself in the arena to find out…
My intentions for the year were to:
- •Increase my rate of learning
- •Work on projects to build skills
- •Find more people I resonate with
- •Travel and get excited about life again lol
It might seem like I had it all planned out, but the truth is, I felt more lost than ever and uncertain of the direction I was headed for most of the year.
So, I think the power of the gap year is to give yourself permission to wander and then connect the dots looking back.
*I put together a video sharing some stories, learnings and what I wish I knew before taking this project-based gap year - I hope it's valuable.
